Spurgeon, Charles Haddon

Spurgeon, Charles Haddon
(1834–92)
   Preacher and Devotional Writer.
Spurgeon was a native of Essex. He was converted into the Baptist Church and in 1850 he became a minister. He established his headquarters in Southwark in 1854 and so successful was his preaching that the New Metropolitan Tabernacle had to be built to accommodate his following. Among his other activities, he founded a Pastors’ College, which is still known as Spurgeon’s College, and an orphanage, and he was one of the instigators of the London Baptist Association. He is remembered for causing controversy within the Church of England by accusing evangelical clergymen in 1864 of committing perjury when they used the Book of Common Prayer (since they did not believe in baptismal regeneration).
He also came into conflict with more liberal fellow-Baptists with the result that he was publicly censured by the Baptist Union in 1887. However, he refused to found another denomination. He was one of the most famous preachers of his day and his collected sermons were widely circulated.
